Leviticus 11:46-47

“This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth: To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.”

Additional Food Requirements

"If a bird's nest chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young: But thou shalt in any wise let the dam go, and take the young to thee; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days."-Deuteronomy 22:6-7

"Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest the fruit of thy seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled."- Deuteronomy 22:9

"And when ye shall come into the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food, then ye shall count the fruit thereof as uncircumcised: three years shall it be as uncircumcised unto you: it shall not be eaten of. But in the fourth year all the fruit thereof shall be holy to praise the LORD withal. And in the fifth year shall ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof: I am the LORD your God."-Leviticus 19:23-25

"Ye shall not eat of any thing that dieth of itself: thou shalt give it unto the stranger that is in thy gates, that he may eat it; or thou mayest sell it unto an alien: for thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God."-Deuteronomy 14:21

"That ye abstain from things strangled: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well." Acts 15:29

"And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs."-Exodus 22:31

"Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood. And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off."-Leviticus 17:12-14

Food additives that have commonly derived unclean sources

Castoreum- a chemical compound that mostly comes from a beaver’s castor sacs, which are milked through a beavers anal glands.

Gelatin- a tasteless, brittle substance extracted by boiling bones, hoofs, and animal tissue, and is used in the preparation of foods and medicine capsules.

Lard- the fat of hogs melted down and clarified to become a white, soft solid.

Glycerin-Can come from plant derivative but more commonly from the cheapest (pig) fat.

Mono- and Di-Glycerides- comes from glycerin.

Iodine- can and often dose come from shellfish.

Steric Acid/ Magnesium Sterate- comes from both vegetable and animal fats.

Flavorings-this includes the words “bacon flavorings” or the plain word “flavorings”. Flavorings can sometimes mean the food was flavored with Hog fat (a.k.a. Lard) or this may plainly mean that it was flavored with an undisclosed but biblically clean season

Isinglass- fish gelatin made from sturgeon’s swim bladder. The sturgeon is a group of fish that almost never have scales, like an American“cat fish”. Isinglass is often an additive in imported beer, wine and occasionally domestic beer also. This will NOT be listed on the label due to the fact that isinglass is used in the clarification process as a net that catches all unwanted particles. The particles and the isinglass are then taken out of the beverage and therefor are not considered an additive, yet biblically we should not eat such things as touch the unclean.

Alpha Amytase- Made from hog pancreas.  Used in some flours to breakdown any starches.

Ambergris- Made from whale intestine.  Used in some foods as flavoring and also used in perfumes.

Carmine (Cochineal)- A crimson pigment derived from a Mexican species of scale insect (coccus cacti).  Its used as coloring in red apple sauce, fruit cocktail, confections, baked goods, beverages, meats and spices.

Vitamin D- Possibly could be derived from pork.  Common in fortified foods including milk.

Shellac- Derived from insect secretions.  Used in glazes in confectioneries.

Potato Chips- may contain Lard

Dog Food– Contains many different types of unclean food. Even if it says Lamb and Rice or Chicken and Beef they still use “animal fat”, and “animal digest”. So it is better not to let small children get into these things

Medicine and Pharmaceuticals

There are very few medical products that are offered in the local store or pharmacy that are truly clean. You must call every company in order to prove its source. There are no kosher medications and pharmaceuticals on account of the rabbinical (Not biblical) approach to medication; that is that as long as it is prescribed to treat your illness or if it is tastes bad, it is not food.

Acth (Adrenocorticotropin)- From the pig's pituitary glands used to treat Leukemia, cystic fibrosis gout and arthritis.

Adrenalin- From pig's adrenal glands.

Soap/Personal care products

Anything that you put on your body, ranging from deodorant, toothpaste, cosmetics, lotion and many others often have unclean additives. This is mentioned here because you cannot clean yourself with unclean things. Below is a list of ingredients to source verify if you do not want to touch unclean things.

Lard- Fat from pork is used

Glycerin- May be derived from pork

Kosher Symbols

If you see a kosher symbol or certification you can be mostly sure that it doesnt have pork or shellfish in it. You can not trust this entirely due to the principles of those who certify it however. While mainly derived from Scripture, "Kosher" in modern commercial standards is also comprised of tradition and interpretation derived from sources other than Scripture.  One example is the kosherization of duck. Jews consider it kosher while it is not a biblical clean food.

Also, just because it does not have a kosher symbol on it does not mean it is unclean. Companies pay for kosher certification in hopes that it will help them in receiving more business.  Some companies on the other hand do not pay for this service, but that does not mean that the food is unclean, this is found in more “generic” brand named foods.

Kosherization also forbids the combination of dairy product and meat.  So this may be another reason why many foods that contain clean meat and dairy products are not koshered, such as cheese that is made with an enzyme called rennet, produced from a calves’ stomach; kosher cheese is made with vegetable rennet.
