Luke 15:4

"What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, does not leave the ninety nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?"

Heritage Breed: Icelandic Sheep

The Icelandic sheep is one of the world's oldest and purest breeds of sheep. It is thought that it was introduced to Iceland by Vikings in the late ninth or early tenth century.

Throughout its 1100 years of history, the Icelandic breed has been truly triple-purpose, treasured for its meat, fiber and milk. Though famous throughout the world for wool production, the Icelandic breed is predominately grown for meat in Iceland.

The sheep have evolved over under difficult farming conditions in Iceland, with a resultant sturdy and efficient constitution. A defining quality of the Icelandic breed is the ability to survive on pasture and browse. Historically, Iceland is not a grain producing country due to the climate, and the breed has survived through its thousand year history on pasture and hay.

Meet Anna, Owner and Operator

From the moment Anna was smitten by some baby lambs she held at a visit we made to the good folks at Grandview Farms when she was seven, Anna has been saving up her money to buy herself sheep. We are talking $.50 a day chore money, tips our wonderful customers give her at market, and any money she has gotten from birthdays etc., every single penny of it. She has spent the time reading sheep books and talking about her flock and all the things she’s going to do with it. From milking them to making cheese and yogurt with the milk; to fleecing them and making sweaters and hats; and eating them and selling all of the above to the community. She is a girl with a big dreams, and she understands whats needed to achieve them.

Well not only did she save up enough money to get herself sheep, she saved up all the money for all the fencing for her sheep as well.  Everything about this venture at Goshen Homestead is hers, and hers alone. This is legit her very own business.

As we move into having product from this venture, you will be supporting this young girls hard work and discipline! Her devotion to this enterprise is most impressive and we are as excited as you all are to see her entire dream come to full fruit.
